Can Exfoliating Make Dark Marks Worse on Brown Skin?

· Farnaz Khan

Yes. Exfoliation that irritates your skin can make dark marks more noticeable. The American Academy of Dermatology advises people with darker skin tones, or a history of marks after breakouts and injuries, to avoid aggressive exfoliation. More scrubbing is not necessarily more progress.1

If you have been trying to polish away a mark and your skin now stings, the next step is not another stronger product. It is a calmer routine.

A dark mark is not dirt you need to scrub away

A flat patch of colour after a breakout is different from a change in the skin's texture. That distinction matters when choosing your next step. Our guide to dark spots versus acne scars explains the difference without treating every mark as the same concern.

Your natural skin tone is not the problem. Our goal is to support a more even-looking complexion, not persuade you to become a different shade of yourself.

What should make you pause?

Burning or stinging is a reason to stop using the product causing it, not proof that it is working. The AAD also advises choosing gentle products because irritation can make dark spots darker.2

Look at the whole routine, not just the newest bottle. A scrub, an exfoliating toner and several active products may be more than your skin feels comfortable with together. The AAD notes that exfoliation can worsen sensitivity or peeling caused by other products.1

Do not exfoliate open wounds or sunburned skin. If symptoms persist, seek advice rather than continuing to experiment.

Give each step a clear purpose

Keep cleansing comfortable. Use a moisturiser your skin tolerates. Do not introduce several new products at once. You can read our guide to unsettled skin and irritation before deciding whether another active belongs in your routine.

Once skin feels comfortable, a targeted serum can have a separate role from exfoliation. Advance Clearing Serum is a 30ml formula with 10% THD vitamin C and 4% niacinamide for the appearance of uneven tone and dark marks. That does not make it a treatment for irritated skin, and it does not mean using more will work faster. Patch test, follow the packaging and introduce gradually.

Keep sun protection in the picture

The AAD recommends sunscreen as part of dark-spot care. For darker skin tones and visible-light concerns, it highlights tinted sunscreen containing iron oxide, alongside suitable UV protection.2 An SPF number alone does not establish visible-light protection.

Browse SPF and sun protection and check each product's own details. Use shade and protective clothing too. Do not reduce sunscreen application to change how it looks on your skin.

When is professional advice the better next step?

Persistent, changing or unexplained pigmentation deserves assessment. Cosmetic skincare cannot diagnose its cause. If a prescribed treatment is part of your care, discuss changes with the clinician who recommended it.

Get yourself back does not mean fighting your face. It means giving your skin care you can understand. Explore our pigmentation and dark-spot collection, or start with the melanin-rich skin guide if you want the wider picture.
