Olive

INCI / botanical name: Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil

Evidence level:Emerging human evidence

Olive oil is one of the oldest beauty ingredients in the world, and the olive tree holds a special place in Islamic heritage. In SHIFAH it brings softness and nourishment to our soaps and hair care.

Find Olive in SHIFAH

What it does

Emollient: a rich plant oil that softens skin and hair and helps reduce the feeling of dryness. In soap, olive oil gives a gentle, conditioning lather.

Islamic heritage

Quran 95:1: "By the fig and the olive." Quran 24:35 describes "a blessed olive tree".
Hadith: "Season (your food) with olive oil and anoint yourselves with it, for it comes from a blessed tree." (Sunan Ibn Majah 3319; also narrated by at-Tirmidhi. Scholars differ on the strength of its chains.)
These references show the honour given to the olive. They are not presented here as medical proof.

Traditional use Traditional use

Traditional use: olive oil has been used across the Mediterranean and Middle East for centuries to oil the hair and body and to make soap.

What the research says

Small human studies show olive oil can improve how hydrated skin feels. A 2025 study compared extra virgin olive oil with petrolatum on skin barrier measures. Its role in cleansing bars and hair oils is mainly as a softening, conditioning oil.

Limitations, honestly

Evidence is mostly small studies. One study found pure olive oil used alone on adult skin for weeks could weaken the skin barrier, so SHIFAH uses it inside balanced formulas such as soap and hair care rather than as a pure leave-on face oil.
