I was prescribed medical-grade skincare, believing that because it came recommended by professionals, it must be safe for me.
But when I started looking deeper into the ingredients, I discovered things that shocked me. Ingredients with potential health concerns, preservatives associated with formaldehyde release, chemicals under scrutiny for their effects on hormones, harsh drying alcohols and ingredients derived from animals.
Then I looked beyond skincare. I went to the supermarkets I had trusted for years. The shampoos, cleansers, body washes and everyday essentials we use without a second thought. I started reading the labels. And the more I researched, the more questions I had.
Why were we expected to understand complicated ingredient lists ourselves? Why weren't we taught to question what we were putting on our skin every single day? Why did something being sold on a supermarket shelf automatically make us assume it was right for us?
I realised that I couldn't simply rely on a brand name, a professional recommendation or attractive packaging. I needed to understand what I was actually using.
I didn't want to spend my life putting things on my skin without knowing what they contained.
And then my own skincare journey took an even more devastating turn. After a beauty treatment left me with third-degree burns and almost cost me my sight, doctors told me I would be scarred for life. I knew I wanted to do things differently.
I began looking towards something that had been in front of us all along: nature. I explored the botanical ingredients mentioned in the Quran, the wisdom of traditional plant-based remedies and what modern skincare science could teach us.
That journey became SHIFAH.
But we wanted to create something that went beyond skincare.
Our faith teaches us that what we give for the sake of Allah is never wasted. Allah tells us in the Quran:
“And whatever you spend of anything [in Allah's cause], He will replace it; and He is the best of providers.” Quran 34:39
This became part of the heart behind SHIFAH. We didn't want to build another skincare business that simply took from people. We wanted to build something that gave back.
